Tanglin Rugby Club — Turning Club Heritage into a Handcrafted Keepsake

The Challenge
Tanglin Rugby Club is a community-led, non-profit organisation supported by parents, coaches and volunteers, with a strong tradition of developing youth rugby and bringing families together through the sport.
For the TRC Cup tournament in Malaysia, Island Whisper Atelier was commissioned to create a bespoke piece that members, families and supporters would genuinely want to own, while also contributing to the club’s fundraising efforts.
The challenge was to translate an established sporting identity into something artistic, beautifully crafted and memorable — without losing the energy and recognisable character of the club.
Rather than simply placing a logo onto a product, every element was considered as part of the design.
Creative Direction
Our starting point was the identity of Tanglin Rugby Club — its distinctive colours, sporting heritage, strong sense of community and the energy surrounding the TRC Cup.
Rather than treating the club logo as a graphic to simply place onto a product, we incorporated its visual identity into an original hand-painted watercolour composition, creating something recognisable to members while giving the design its own artistic character.
We also developed the phrase “Tackle the Heat”, connecting the energy of the tournament with the practical purpose of the hand fan in Malaysia’s tropical climate.
The result was a design that felt unmistakably TRC — bold, functional and personal, yet refined enough to become a keepsake beyond the event.
Original Artwork
The creative process began by translating Tanglin Rugby Club’s distinctive identity into an original watercolour artwork developed specifically for the project.
The club’s iconic dragon became a central element of the composition, hand-painted in TRC red and combined with carefully considered graphic details inspired by the team, its colours and the atmosphere of the tournament.
The artwork was then adapted to the unique proportions and folds of a handcrafted fan, ensuring that the design remained balanced and recognisable when fully opened.
From club identity to original artwork, and from artwork to a piece made to be used, enjoyed and remembered.
The Final Hand Fan
The original watercolour artwork was transformed into a bespoke handcrafted hand fan designed exclusively for Tanglin Rugby Club and the TRC Cup.
Featuring black wooden ribs, TRC’s distinctive red palette, the hand-painted dragon and the “Tackle the Heat” message, the final piece combined original artwork with traditional hand fan craftsmanship.
Designed for Malaysia’s tropical climate, it became both a practical event accessory and a distinctive keepsake — demonstrating how custom luxury hand fans can bring together brand identity, storytelling and craftsmanship in a memorable way.
